what would you be telling barack obama if you were vising him about these upcoming debates? >> i would tell him first he has to understand that romney can win this debate if he's scripted, prepared, has really worked at it. if you watched him on "60 minutes" last sunday, he was smooth, he was clear, he was succinct. he was different than he has been. he has to be careful not to be spontaneous because when he is, he gets himself in trouble. i think they are on a search for zingers and one-liners because romney was cover-upped by kennedy. they have to be careful because the president could have a comeback. i think what you do in the debate preps you try to game out what the other side is going to say and then you try to see how you can respond. it's always strongest when it's a comeback. zenners don't work as a cute line. they work as part of the fabric of argument. in 1980, they knew jimmy carter was going to look at ronald reagan and say, "you were against medicare" at the beginning, happened to be true. but reagan looked at him, shook his head and said, "there you go again.

let's listen to president obama as he answered that question in the debate this week to inspect the first role of the government is to keep people safe. that is the most basic function, and as commander-in-chief, that is something that i have worked on and thought about every single day that i've been in the oval office. but i also believe that government has the capacity, the federal government has the capacity to help open up opportunities and create ladders of opportunity and create frameworks' where the american people can succeed. the genius of america is the free enterprise system and freedom, and the fact that people can go out there and start a business, work on an idea, make their own decisions, but as abraham lincoln understood, there's also things we do better today. so, in the middle of the civil war, abraham lincoln said let's help finance the transcontinental railroad. let's start the national academy of sciences. let's start the land grant colleges because we want to give the gateway if they are giving opportunity we are all going to be better off. that doesn't restrict peo

remember, mitt romney spent all those debates, the 23 where everybody said he won 19 of them debating within a pretty narrow window ideologically. barack obama has been dealing with people all across the spectrum, the house republicans in particular, for at least two years now. and when he is kind of tangling with the press, he is getting questions from all angles. so i think he is going to be okay. i know the white house is trying to downplay it and say how, you know, romney is -- the fact of the matter is i think obama needs to remind people what he has done. he needs to stay cool, calm, and collected. i think the challenge is we see romney being so robotic from time to time and saying these somewhat goofy things, the $10,000 bet, you know, i like firing people, those kind of things. and i think the challenge for obama is not frankly to pounce on those. he knows exactly what romney is going to bring at him. brett is right. i think romfully be respectful. but i think the challenge will be to counterpunch as effectively as possible. >> brett, gq wrote about the squ advice you gave rom
